This is the first Work-in-Progress showing of an excerpt from The Pocho Project, an evening-length performance to be presented in New York in 2020. (“Pocho” is a Spanish word often applied to assimilated Mexican-Americans and implying “cultural traitor.”) Drawing on Moreno’s experience as a third-generation Mexican-American, The Pocho Project reclaims “pocho” to examine how immigration, cultural gatekeeping, and assimilation are embedded in the ways we move, talk, and write.
