We had a good time dancing. The dance floor is big enough to mean business and a lot of couples get on it but is not too crowded to move freely. The building is divided by a wall into two sections, a restaurant in the west half and a lounge in the east half. And no small matter - they have a full restaurant menu available until closing and served in either section of the building.

On the patio you may need to find your own area, on the patio in front of the band (brick floor) or back behind (rough wood steps leading out of patio pit) or on a rough cement walkway to the patio and behind the patio fence (Danced in sneakers). (Area: Kansas City, local, Kansas,Missouri) (Category pages: swing, country) Isle of Capri Casino Usage: venue
Music: classic rock Crowd: 30's and up CategoryPage(s): casino, concerts
Note: (Former Flamingo Casino) - Some of the best danceable rock music in the area. Classic acts brought to KC on a regular basis. The only pity is the lack of any kind of real dance area. If the music weren't so good they would be worth talking about for dancers. You'll just have to go for the music and make do for dance spaces.
Most of these are outdoor concerts and the only place to dance is on grass or on a patio area near the top of an embankment. On rain dates there is a wood floor inside behind the bar/lounge area or just expect to dance on carpet around the top of the gambling area.

J.A.D. Usage: venue
Music: Juke Box Selections Crowd: 20's - 30's Looks: not fancy, working class bar CategoryPage(s): nightclub
Note: Did have live swing. Dropped live music for lack of crowds. No DJ. Juke Box Selections. Not fancy in looks. Could describe it as a working class bar with pool tables, bar area, sitting tables all in an L-shaped area. J.A.D. is the former 'Helen's'. It is next door to McDonalds and right near a Total gas station with a convenience store at the intersection of Armour and Vernon (across the road from Payless Cashways) about 1/4 mile east of I-29.
Visit: Good sized meeting-room area in a section of bar for entertainment with a 15 foot wide stage with a dance area across the front. Most of the room is now filled with six pool tables on carpeting. They open at 10am and close at 3am. Serve food from 11am until about 2:30am. Basket meals ($5 and $5.50 - burgers, chicken, quesadillas)
Jersey's Sports Cafe Usage: venue
Music: rock, classic and danceable (works for swing) Floor: hardwod about 12x15, mirror on wall nice Crowd: 20-50's Looks: sports bar, casual dress CategoryPage(s): rock, swing
Note: On 24 Hwy about 0.6 miles east of 291 up front in the Susquehanna Shopping Center. Fri-Sat 9pm-1am.
Visit: Band sets up in the dart area adjacent to and slightly above the dancefloor. Neighborhood crowd mixing 20's to 50's+. They do get on the floor and move around here. Framed Chief's jerseys around the walls, and other sports bar trappings: team logos, pictures, emblems. Sectioned into a bar area with pools tables and an island bar, and two seating areas at different levels then a dancing and dart-band area. Nice club for dancing. Both EC and WC although we found West Coast swing worked better for most of the music.
John Knox Village Pavilion Usage: venue
Music: ballroom, swing, oldies,Latin Floor: hardwood 50x50 - one of the finest in the area Crowd: older, largely retired Looks: very nice, modern, airy CategoryPage(s): ballroom, swing
Note: John Knox Village is a non-denominational, not-for-profit retirement community. They usually have one dance a month in the pavilion. It is an open dance with a band.
Visit: The Pavilion is a large, pyramid-shaped event hall - a single large room with a big stage and a 50x50 foot (or so) hardwood dance floor - very nice floor. This is one of the nicest dance floors in the entire area. The room itself is a beautiful space for ballroom dancing with its large clear space - no columns - almost pristine in appearance.
Johnny O'Quigley's Usage: venue
Music: Retro Crowd: lates 20's to mid 40's Looks: casual, upper middle CategoryPage(s): rock
Note: Highway 45 (64th street) exit. On the south side of the road, take a turn south on N. Chatam road (at the Texaco) and make a right turn behind the Texaco and Blockbuster's and go to the end of the lot (careful, lots of road traffic and traffice into and out of the Hen House grocery). Saturday's they have live music for dancing and a little karaoke. The floor area is small (10x10) but quite nice. The corwd is late 20's to mid 40's. If you know how to partner dance the floor is pretty much yours.
John's Big Deck Usage: venue
Days: Thu: Ladies night and karaoke
Music: Rock, contemporary bands, Fri/Sat Floor: room flooring inside: cement out: deck planking Crowd: 20's Looks: casual CategoryPage(s): rock
Note: Happy hour specials 4-6 pm. The second floor (concrete floor space pushed away from the tables for some dance space) and above the second floor on an outside wooden patio deck, also a small amount of space but no dedicated dance floor as such. Downtown, 928 Wyandotte. Bands Fri-Sat, Tue., Wed-Sat.
Visit: Dancing is in an area of patio-type deck-planking on the roof, between the large amount of table seating and the bandstand in the SW corner of the roof deck. I've been there before when there was almost no room to dance. Otherwise they pull the tables back a little farther for dancing room for several couples.
The deck planking is pretty uneven though and tilts slightly to the north so ease up on spin things and wear street shoes (you might want to think twice about spike heels as well). They also use the second floor for private parties or dancing (especially in inclement weather). This is mostly a yuppies-type 20's crowd but anyone can join in.
They have a couple of regular panhandlers on the street with sort of regular spots around there and some who also find their way into the club and who will approach you in the corridor up to the deck. They are not really a threat but you should say no - firmly.

The Kansas City Lindy Exchange (KCLX - URL: www.kclx.com) is being handled by local dancers within a few different groups. So, there is no formal organization 'running the show' but mainly just dedicated dancers working together. It is an enterprise self-funded through ticket sales and sponsorships. Hopes are always that it will break even or get away with a few hundred extra as seed money for the next event. Whether formally incorporated or not, exchanges are non-profit events.
Exchanges began around 5 or 6 years ago with a true 'exchange' of dancers between Chicago and San Francisco,

The Levee is a long-time and very popular watering hole. Mostly 20's-30's crowd. Few seem to know much about partner dancing. If it is partner dancing you want this is not it. But if you want to dance anyway, and enjoy a famed KC meeting place, visit and dance. Depending on the crowd there will be dancers.

Visit: Floor is maybe 12x12 or a little more, not in the bestshape as far as finish and polish go but they make an effort to keep it clean (while we were there someone spilled drinks and they were right there to clean the floor). Had a good time dancing to a live band (almost, we came in at the tail end of their gig), another old-guys-with-day-jobs band - one of my favorite kinds.
Their technique may not have been without mistakes but their drummer kept a beat to dance by. The decor is a bit rough hewn. This is not a formal place. Jeans, cut-offs, t-shirts etc. and a light sprinkling of some Harley gear.

Visit: Very popular night spot. The outside performanaces during warm weather are on the north side of Winslows, on the open court area of the City Market. The dance surface is the brick sidewalk. This is downright slick brick. Wear your street shoes to dance or even very used sneakers. Spins and turns are almost slippery on the brick. It forms an uneven, up and down surface and you are constantly doging the wait staff and other persons traveling back and forth. If you are in to this kind of real it is a lot of fun. Just don't expect ballroom conditions. Have a good time
