The Rep pulled this kind of dirty trick (my very personal characterization) on Wylliams-Henry a year ago when they pulled a big party for the rep,
knocking out the parking lot for their opening night. This year it is not a party. This year the barriers will be up for both nights.
I call that totally disregardful, especially for an entity which benefits so massively by being housed in UMKC's Performing Arts Center.

About A Shot and About How I Shoot

I like to shoot rehearsals both for my own rehersal and to decide which shots in particular I want to pick up in the dress or the performance. This is an example of picking up a shot in a studio rehearsal of Roman Cruz during "Desire" and making a point of getting that shot later during an onstage, in costume rehearsal. The early shot is good by itself and while I like showing the full environment in the studio which other dancers around the periphery it can also be cropped into a vertical with just Roman.

Side point: These are not happy accidents, although I get some of those too. Nor are they the result of "continuous drive" (a multiple-rapid-shot mode setting on digital cameras). These results would be impossible with continuous drive. Tip: Never, ever set the shutter to "continuous drive" for any subject or event. You have to shoot each very, very tiny moment exactly when it happens. Always use "single" shot mode. Period. More.

Then came the dreas rehearsal on Thursday and I knew it was coming up, I could see it form. I shot at the right moment but I didn't get the camera up high enough and I cut off Roman's head. Crap! I almost returned to shoot Friday from stage-right wings but didn't, though it would have been good because he looks into the stage-right wings.

By Saturday, when I was shooting video I really wanted to get the shot correctly. So, with a long lens on my still camera on a tripod setup next to my close-view video camera I waited for that spot in Desire (the last piece). When the jump was about to happen I quickly leaned to my left, pointed the still camera and hit the shutter again. Right on the mark. Another horizontal shot (below right) similar to the original studio shot. I cropped a second version for a vertical (see photo above).

I also wanted one of the crossover splits in Sha Tah Tee Saturday and I picked that up, the same way, because I knew when and what I could expect. In journalism it is called subject knowledge. At a couple of other places on this page I have examples of an earlier studio shot next to a costumed, on-stage shot either above or below.
