Original Release Text

The primary color red is the longest wavelength of light discernible to the human eye. Red also represents a wide range of human passion, from anger to love. With "Red Dances," City in Motion Dance Theater will present eight pieces with a connection to the color red, including costuming, lighting, and set design.

"Red Dances" will include six works by the three Artistic Co-Directors of City in Motion Dance Theater: Andrea Skowronek, Dale Fellin and Penelope Hearne. Andrea Skowronek will present "Three Preludes," a playful romp for five dancers set to William Boyce's Symphony No. 4 in F Major. Ms. Skowronek will also present a structured improvisation entitled "Labyrinth," set to two meditative compositions for hammer dulcimer by Jem Moore. The dancers walk on a cloth labyrinth that serves as a pathway and a metaphor for the unpredictable journey through life.

Dale Fellin's trio, "Didgeridoo," is an abstract exercise in choreographic exploration and experimentation, inspired by the music of Adam Plack. Mr. Fellin's "Illuminata" is a physically challenging work, set to the fast paced music of Stacy Wildelitz. "Illuminatata" premiered at 'A Modern Night at the Folly' on January 19, 2008 and depicts spirits awakening in heaven, celebrating the illumination of their souls.

Penelope Hearne uses set design, audio collage, poetry and dynamic modern dance in her group piece "A Daydream or a Fever." The music, by Miles Davis, Saul Williams, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Decoder Ring, is diced and intermixed throughout the piece's abstract storyline, to subtly convey an anti-war statement. Ms. Hearne's solo, "Semi-Detached Split-Level Luxury," allows the audience a peek into the mind of a 1940s housewife. The solo, performed to music by Mogwai, suggests curiosity, isolation and the desire for freedom.

Stephanie Whittler, a City in Motion Dance Theater company member, will perform her introspective solo, "Lost (Myself)," to music by Sia. Sarah Mermis Payne will present a light-hearted piece for seven dancers and five exercise trampolines entitled "I see in my mind…all of this music," to music by Regina Spektor.

City in Motion Dance Theater's "Red Dances" will be presented at 8:00 pm on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Gem Theater, located at 1615 E. 18th Street, in the historic 18th and Vine District. A silent auction will take place in the lobby before the show and during intermission. "Red Dances" will also raise awareness and funding for local service organizations helping women, men and children living with HIV/AIDS in our community. Tickets for "Red Dances" are $18 in advance, $15 for students and seniors, $10 for children 12 and under and $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling the Gem Theater Box Office at 816-474-6262.

Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, The Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, The Richard J. Stern Foundation, and The Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
