Cat Johnson's Merce/Breaks

18 November 2007
Grant Hall Recital Theater, UMKC, Kansas City, Missouri

Snow (sections I and II)
Ghost Writer
Snow (sections III and IV)

Cat Johnson is a dance major at UMKC and a breaker. She received a search grant from UMKC for in-depth study. She could see a connection between Merce Cunningham's philosophy of dance and breaking (break dance). She wanted to solidify and fill in that connection with a detailed articulation. To do so she studied at the Merce Cunningham .... (website: www.merce.org) This concert, "Merce/Breaks," brings back what she absorbed in a tangible connection.

Cat Johnson: "By melding the freedom of movement principle inherent in the vocabulary of breaking and merce cunnighham technique, the piece will have a great deal of latitude given in movement possibliities. Contemporary forms of partnering are evident in both aformentioned dance forms and philosopies. Post-modernist partnering is abundant in breaking and in cunningham."

Audio - Before Performance Talk
Formats: mp3, wma (Windows Media), wav file
NOTE: the recorder is off to the side for the first half, then I moved it to the front on the floor and the audio really cleans up

Taking applause at the end of performance - Cat high-clapping in the middle

After performance - ready for finger food backstage.

This work comes after a grant to study Merce Cunningham.
This is Cat's philosophical merger of breaking and Merce-ing.
